Khoresht Gheimeh Bademjan

For us Persian Jews, Friday nights are for gathering around with friends and family for huge Shabbat feasts of Persian food. It is my favorite part of my week, a night we all get to slow down, eat good food, and share our life experiences with one another. At almost every single table was at least one type of khoresht, or Persian stew–this is my favorite of all–it’s a tomato based stew with meat,  yellow lentils, and most importantly cinnamon and limoo Amani–or dried limes.

My parents along with many others came to America to survive ongoing persecution against Jews during the Iranian revolution in the 1970s. With them they brought their cultural values and cuisine and I think it’s ironic yet beautiful that they get to pass on what was from a place they had to escape.

Today, the same Iranian government is once again abusing its power, killing its own citizens for protesting against the unjust killing of Mahsa Amini for not wearing her hijab.

Only together can we be the voice for the people of a beautiful culture and land, one of love, kindness and generosity.
